I have been telling Max that his breath stinks when he doesn't brush his teeth, he responds by following me around the house breathing out as hard as he can. The other day I took the kids with me to a craft store to pick-up a couple of things. While I was checking out, Max wandered over to a display close to the register. As I glanced up from making my purchase, I saw that he was no longer by the display case. After a quick circle around the store I went outside the main entrance and scanned the parking lot. At this point I am angry and anxious. I turned back to the entrance and through the sliding doors I can see Max searching for me with trembling lips and watery eyes.
"Max, I've told you again and again to stay close to me and not walk away from the cart! I searched all over the store and couldn't find you!"
"But Mommy, you could have just followed my breath."
Even now, after getting a whif, I think, "maybe I could find him anywhere."
Multiple times a day, Max has been asking me to buy him this or that or take him to McDonalds for a Happy Meal so, last week I decided it was high time he realized we were in a recession. I explained a little about what it meant and how we needed to budget what we spent our money on and how blessed we were that daddy has a job because many people are being layed-off work, etc. I thought that most of this conversation went over his head until a couple of mornings ago Herb was leaving for work and Max told him to stay late and not come home until it was bed time. Curious, I asked Max why he wanted daddy to stay late. "Usually you can't wait for dad to get home. What gives?"
"I want daddy to work late so he can earn more money for Happy Meals and to give to those people without jobs."
Gotta love his sensitivity and priorities.
I think I'm your biggest fan and I love getting to know you, Max and your darling family through your blog. I'm so glad you found him, isn't that the worst feeling? Not that you found him, but that feeling when you can't find him. :) Love ya!
ReplyDeleteFollowing people around the house breathing on them? I wonder which parent he got that from???
ReplyDeleteMax's comment at the store was a definite laugh out loud. Dave will love that one. Thanks for a good laugh.
Oh what a tender little sweetheart. I wish I knew him better. Thanks for helping us get to know him via your blog!
ReplyDeleteHe's adorable! What a keen mind and a soft heart he has, Jenna. The product of good parenting... here and in the eternities before he blessed your life.
ReplyDeleteYour site is going to be fun for me to follow... it's always a good read.
I'm still giggling at Max in the store. Who needs bread crumbs, eh? Although, he may be AFRAID to brush his teeth now... if he thinks he needs that stinky breath for you to find him.
