Sign of Global Warming?

Nah, just a freak snowstorm. Chances are, if you have watched any news the past couple of days, you've probably seen pictures of the big snowstorm that has hit the DC area. Depending upon which reporter you listen to, this snowstorm has shattered previous records that had held solid for centuries, okay, maybe decades. I can personally vouch that this snowstorm has dumped the most snow in two days that I've seen in the ten and a half years I have lived in Northern Virginia.

For those of you acquainted with frequent winter storms, you may think, "What's the big deal?" The big deal is that this area rarely sees more than a few inches of snow each winter, if any at all. The entire region shuts down if there's even a report of two inches of snow on the ground. Schools close, government offices shut down, traffic is a complete mess and grocery store shelves are emptied while citizens prepare to spend days inside their cozy homes. People here don't know how to drive in snowy weather and there aren't enough plows on hand to keep the roads clear in a timely fashion. So, you can imagine how twenty-four plus inches of snow has effected our little corner of the world.

Everything is buried in the white fluffy stuff. We have been fortunate not to have had any power outages, though many in the surrounding neighborhood did. My biggest concern was that baby Jonah would decide it was time to arrive in the middle of it all. Though he is now three days overdue, the little guy has been hanging tight and has not shown he's anxious to leave his comfy surroundings any time soon. Whew! I don't know how we would have made it to the hospital either Friday or Saturday night in the middle of the storm. Today, thankfully, the main roads near our house have at least one lane that is plowed and our driveway is shoveled with the cars no longer buried in snow. Thanks, Herb!

The storm has left behind a beautiful winter wonder land so we walked with the kids through the neighborhood to the local elementary school where we had some fun sledding. It was a gorgeous sunny day. People were in a good mood out shoveling, walking and playing in the snow. We saw more people outside in the neighborhood than I've seen in the past 6 mos we've lived here.

Herb has been busy piling up blessings for a our family as he's been shoveling driveways and sidewalks for our neighbors, single families in the ward and other good Samaritan deeds. I love that I'm married to such a good man!

We've also enjoyed visiting with our good friends the Feiks. They have an Excursion vehicle that can conquer any type of snowstorm. It was nice to have some company while hunkering down during the storm.

  1. Wow! That really is a storm, even by Utah standards. Looks like great fun.

Oh, and I love that Herb is wearing jeans in the snow. According to Dave, that is a cardinal sin.

  2. How fun! We got the same storm in MI but we are part of the people that just lock ourselves in the house and wait for it to melt.

These are such fun pictures and will be such fun memories.

  3. That is some serious snow. Reminds me of Winter '93. And you get... 10,000 extra points for going sledding with the fam at 9 months.

    It all looks so beautiful.
