We celebrated the birth of our nation's independence with breakfast and fireworks. Our
church congregation traditionally holds a morning flag ceremony and breakfast followed by games of kickball and softball. It's held at a local park and always a lot of fun. The kids and I enjoyed an afternoon nap while Herb scouted a place for us to watch the DC fireworks. He found us a great spot on the hill near the
Iwo Jima Memorial overlooking the Washington Monument. We arrived in the early evening and hung out with the kids and a few other thousand people. We provided a good deal of entertainment for those around us as they watched Herb and I struggle to keep Max and Lincoln from wrestling each other and prevent them from dashing into the vast crowd of spectators.
Fortunately, just as the boys were approaching their limit, our good friends, the Huishes arrived with their kids. They had driven directly from the airport after a vacation in Arizona. That is true patriotism. Soon after their arrival, a spectacular fireworks display lit up the sky as well as our kids' faces. It was worth the wait.
